Dear Donald Barry, I am writing you concerning the United State's position in the upcoming CITES meeting being held in Gigiri, Kenya in April. I am very concerned about the elephant and the increase in poaching that has been taking place over the past two years since the ivory trade ban was relaxed. I feel it is the United States' duty to support India and Kenya with their proposal to re-transfer all elephant populations back to the Appendix I. As well, I ask that you oppose the proposals put forward by Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe to establish an annual ivory export quota and to expand trade in live elephants and elephant parts. This sure would spell disaster to the elephants in Africa. Please oppose the proposal submitted by South Africa that would allow it transfer its population to Appendix II so that it can export stockpiled ivory from elephants killed in Kruger National Park and export live elephants and elephant skin and hunting trophies. I urge you to take a stand on this issue and make our position one of pride; a position that we can be proud of and one that will save the lives of many humans caught in the crossfire, and the slaughter of helpless elephants.
